SILENT FILM ERA AND WURLITZER ORGAN

Grades 3-12, 60 minutes (tour available afterwards)

Bring your students to the Historic Paramount Theatre in downtown Seattle to step back in time to the 1920s. Hear the Paramount’s own Mighty Wurlitzer organ, see a segment of a silent film and learn about the silent film era- a perfect opportunity for students to learn about theatre, music and history. This Lecture/Demonstration with organist Dennis James will include: demonstration of the organ and sound effects; discussion on the silent film era and composing/scoring for silent film; and a screening of a short silent film. Tours of the theatre available afterwards for interested groups (please specify with reservation). More information on student programs here. Performance and installation artist take over the historic Moore Theatre for one unforgettable night. If you think the spectacle only happens on stage, think again. Regional artists are selected to create works in diverse locations of the theatre and re-interpret the rich 100 year history of The Moore. Presented by 4 Culture, the Site-Specific King County Performance Network and Seattle Theatre Group.

DANCE This Summer Training Intensive (ages 13-22)

The DANCE This Summer Training Intensive is an opportunity for young dancers (ages 13-22) at all levels to immerse themselves in dance over the course of two weeks. Students will be exposed to a wide range of dance styles and techniques in a supportive, yet challenging atmosphere. DANCE This brings together teen performers from diverse communities for collaboration and to share their culture through the art of dance. The performance features young local dancers in collaboration with professional artists performing cross cultural dances—both traditionally rooted and contemporary in form. DANCE This CAMP @ CENTRUM
August 2-8, 2009
Centrum in Port Townsend, WA

NEW for 2009! Open to high school students, DANCE This Camp @ Centrum is an opportunity for young dancers at all levels to study dance for one week in beautiful Port Townsend, WA. Styles include ballet, modern, jazz, hip hop, social and African dance. Please note: this is a residential program/camp. Register online now.   • Alley Cat Theatre
    A series of performances featuring local performers. More information to come.

  • Black Achievers Program Partnership
    STG partners with the Meredith Matthews YMCA Black Achievers Program to expose students to a wide range of performing arts programs. Activities for participants include on-site participatory workshops in music, dance and theatre, a Careers in the Arts presentation and attendance at six STG presentations at the Paramount and Moore Theatres throughout the 2008-2009 season.

  • In-school Workshops and Residencies
    Interested in a hands-on arts experience for students at your school? STG offers residencies available in cultural and contemporary dance and music with Northwest-based artists. Arts instruction is available to suit your school’s interests and needs—varying from a one-time workshop to multiple week residency. Activities are in line with Washington State Arts EALRS and are tailored to students' skill level and ages.

  • Historic Tours of The Paramount and Moore Theatres
    Seattle Theatre Group gives the public a chance to learn more about the historic Paramount and Moore Theatres while giving them a glimpse behind the scenes. Free; once a month; the first Saturday of every month at 10am at The Paramount & the second Saturday of every month at 10am at The Moore Theatre. For more information, click here.

  • Student Tours: STG offers free tours of the historic Paramount and Moore Theatres for educators and students ages seven and up. Tour guides introduce students to theatre architecture, design, history and technical aspects. Schedule tours upon request for student groups.

  • Theatre Access Program (TAP)
    STG annually provides thousands of tickets to performances at The Paramount and Moore Theatres to school groups, youth organizations, community centers, social service organizations, young artists and seniors who would otherwise be unable to afford the opportunity. To apply, click here.

  • The Young Choreographers Lab
    The Young Choreographers Lab is for teens interested in pursuing their artistic vision as choreographers as well as dancers. Up to 20 teens are selected each year to investigate movement invention. In the fall, participants meet once a week, for eight weeks for choreography master classes and in the spring selected choreographers create a larger work—all with the mentorship of leading Seattle choreographers.
